Meta VR Glasses at $1,299: Specs, Tradeoffs, and How They Compare to Vision Pro

Meta's 100-gram VR glasses promise IMAX-scale immersion with a separate compute puck. Here is what we know ahead of the spring 2027 launch.

Meta used Connect 2026 to unveil VR Glasses—a 100-gram headset that aims to put a cinema-scale screen on your face without the neck strain of today's mixed-reality helmets. Scheduled for spring 2027 at $1,299, the device is Meta's most direct answer yet to Apple Vision Pro positioning.

Core specifications

  • Weight: ~100g—Meta claims five times lighter than Quest 3
  • Display: 5K Infinite Display with 70° horizontal by 66° vertical field of view
  • Pixel density: 37 pixels per degree to reduce screen-door effect
  • Media: Dolby Vision, 120Hz, IMAX Enhanced certification (first VR hardware with that label)
  • Audio: Dolby Atmos via frame speakers for spatial audio
  • Compute: Separate puck module for processing, battery, and storage
  • Interaction: Eye and hand tracking; virtual multi-screen workspace support
  • 3D content: Supported, including spatial photos/video outside Apple's ecosystem

The puck tradeoff

Splitting compute into a wearable puck is a design compromise borrowed from prior tethered AR prototypes. Benefits include lighter glasses and swappable battery strategy. Costs include pocket clutter and cable management—fine for desk and sofa use, awkward for walking.

Meta is betting most users want immersive media and productivity at home, not all-day city wear.

Price positioning

At $1,299, Meta undercuts Apple Vision Pro significantly while landing above Quest 3. The pitch is premium immersion without pro-headset weight.

Software story: Muse integration

Hardware without agents is just a monitor. Meta plans Muse integration for hands-free control and contextual assistance—linking these glasses to the broader Connect 2026 agent strategy.

Should you pre-order?

We do not have pre-order dates yet. Early adopters should wait for:

  • Hands-on battery life tests with the puck
  • Latency measurements for eye/hand tracking
  • Third-party app commitments beyond Meta's walled garden

Verdict preview

Meta VR Glasses look like the first credible "cinema headset for normals"—if comfort and display quality match demos. They are not a Vision Pro killer for spatial computing purists. They are a volume play for Netflix-in-bed at IMAX scale.

Full review pending launch. For now, mark spring 2027 on your calendar as the next major headset showdown.
